The Urban Pup in the Making

The Urban Pup in the Making!

Here at The Urban Pup, company directors, Paula, Fraser and Denise, pride themselves in both experience and qualifications. Having between them over 15 years experience in the pet industry, having such passion for dogs, and understanding the loyalty that owners have to their pets, they saw themselves as the perfect team to provide much needed services to the Galway area.

After many chats over many weeks, Denise, Fraser and Paula quickly realised, that they all had similar dreams and ideas and once they put their heads together, and grafted harder than they ever knew possible, The Urban Pup was born.

Meet the Team

Paula The Urban Pup

Paula

Growing up, Paula was infatuated with the animal kingdom, growing up with heroes like Steve Irwin and David Attenborough. She was obsessed with the Reptile world and while still in school, started volunteering in a reptile zoo. Here her passion and knowledge for reptiles and exotic animals grew and she even completed a venomous snake handling course with India’s world famous snake expert, Gerry Martin.

She started working in pet retail in 2013 after dropping out of University. Here she focused on working with the in-store exotic animals and almost by accident, began to gain interest in dog care and nutrition. It was here she discovered that she wanted to progress her career in the dog world. Over the next four years, Paula dabbled in dog daycare work, dog grooming, pet retail, dog training, dog walking and pet-sitting.

With experience came more thirst for knowledge. She started attending courses with the IMDT in training and behaviour, and to date she has attended courses in dog training and behaviour including puppy and scent training, resource guarding, separation anxiety amongst many, many others. She has also competed a course with the IKC in canine anatomy and construction. Paula claims that herself, Denise and Fraser were brought together by “Fate, hardwork and a passion to deliver world class dog care”.

“When the three of us came together, we became a dream team. Our joined obsession and commitment to our own dogs, is what drives us to run such a passionate and honest facility, where owners will never be in doubt that dog welfare is our absolute number one priority”.

Fraser

As a child Fraser always had keen interest in animals, living in Scotland he was a regular at his local stables helping out around the yard and riding horses. He also worked in a boarding and grooming service, where he fell in love with the industry. He also always had dogs in his home house. He started working with animals in his spare time after school in a Boarding facility. When he moved to Galway in 2007 he started studying with Dog Training Ireland and got a job in a daycare facility.

He wanted to set up The Urban Pup because he knew that, with Paula and Denise, they could offer something more unique than what was being offered around Galway at that time. He strongly believes that furthering his education in that field will help influence others with his training methods of positive reinforcement which are on the cutting edge of canine science.

His qualifications are Fetac level 6 in Canine Obedience and Training, IMDT Practical Instructors Course, IMDT Scent Workshop, IMDT Career as a Dog Trainer, IMDT Perfect Puppy Foundations, Canine First Responder, UK College of Scent Dogs PTSD/Therapy Dog and UK College of Scent Dogs Scent Detection.

He’s passionate about every aspect of dog training and offers a wide range of classes within The Urban Pup. Fraser is the proud owner of Charlie, his black labrador, who has been by his side since 2010 and shared many a proud moment performing tricks and especially doing scent work. Fraser has big dreams ahead in The Urban Pup and is hoping to introduce a wide variety of new classes which have never been seen before on the west coast of Ireland.

Denise The Urban Pup

Denise

As a child, Denise has always been obsessed with dogs – from practicing agility in her back garden, to grooming, to competition in IKC competitions with her beloved Dalmatians. She started working in pet retail in 2013, where her knowledge of pet care and nutrition grew with meeting people and their dogs. From this she knew she wanted to progress her career in the dog world. In 2016, she progressed on to dog grooming full time, after completing an online course and work experience in dog grooming with Kilroys College.

As she was grooming regularly, she realised that not only was the skill of grooming important, but knowing and understanding dog behaviour and training was also an important part of being a groomer. Once she got a job as a groomer in a dog daycare facility, she began to learn more about dog behaviour and positive reinforcement training. She started attending courses with the IMDT in training and behaviour, and to date she has attended courses in dog training, dog behaviour, perfect puppy and scent training. She has also competed a course with the IKC in canine anatomy and construction.

Denise wanted to start the Urban Pup as she wanted to bring the services of elite care and expertise to Galway, and she knew that with Paula and Fraser, they would make an unstoppable team. Being able to take her own dogs to work with me everyday is just another plus to the job. The goal would be to expand further and have a few locations around Galway within the next few years, and a hub in Galway for elite dog care.

Karl

Resident “Mammy’s Boy”

Young Doberman Karl, was re-homed to Paula at 18 months old. He is very responsive to training, and highly intelligent. Despite his intelligence, he drastically lacks common sense and has no concept of his almost 40kg frame.

Karl excels in any and all areas of training, including obedience, bitework and scent training, and is both food and toy driven.

Likes: His Mom, his favourite banana teddy, watching polar bears on TV.

Dislikes: Not having his Mom, when he can’t find his banana teddy and when something bad happens to the polar bears on TV.

Charlie The Urban Pup

Charlie

Scent Training Master

Meet Charlie, the fun loving 8 year old black Labrador. His owners, Fraser and Aileen brought this little puppy home when he was 7 weeks old and never imagined how he would change their lives forever. Charlie goes everywhere with his best friend Fraser and are always by each other’s side. Charlie is happy go lucky and is a typical labrador who loves any food. He also loves playing ball, tug, learning new tricks, swimming, sleeping but what he excels at though, is his favourite game, and that’s doing scent work.

Charlie loves going up to Mayo on his holidays! He turns from a city slicker to a country dog and loves running about the fields and barking at cows… from a distance! He is also known to travel abroad to Scotland on holidays. Charlie was diagnosed with hip dysplasia in 2014, but he takes everything in his stride. He dislikes suitcases and waiting for dinner time every day

Amber

Supplies Manager

The dog with the biggest smile, Amber smiles her way through life with a toothy grin on her face. She’s an older girl with a cheeky personality, a bit sensitive (with a hint of stubbornness), but is very much full of life, loves her long walks and playing with the other dogs.

She would much rather her treats just handed to her than to work for them, and a subtle twerk on you is how you know she wants attention.

Likes: smiling, twerking, sleeping, food at all times and flirt pole.

Dislikes: When she sees mom but can’t get to mom, when dinner is over.
